environment at pennant

A formal Environmental Policy was adopted by Pennant in 1993. This has been kept under review by management, and updated when appropriate. It adopts the principles of ISO14001. Environmental issues are integrated into the set of management procedures is used in the office and at all work locations.  Environmental Management covers the initial identification of significant environmental aspects, relating to a specific project, and planning of how to address them. The resultant plan, for large projects is integrated into the overall Assurance Plan for the project.  The key aspects include:-

  • Energy Management – Various types of energy sources are available for construction work. The Project Manager makes informed choices on energy source and usage. Good practice is encouraged to prevent unnecessary waste.
  • Waste material – Landfill tax has harmonised good waste management with financial advantage. Handling, moving and disposing of waste is planned and carried out in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Reuse of Materials  - Reuse of materials are encouraged, subject to controls to ensure that contaminated or deleterious material is not inadvertently put to unsuitable reuse.
  • Sustainability – WJ Harte actively strive towards sustainability through better and more informed buying decisions. Our construction staff are provided with ongoing bulletins relating to ‘sustainable’ and ‘lean’ construction practices and all individuals and partners are encouraged to innovate to return greater results throughout the construction process.
  • Contaminated Land - Contaminated Land is addressed using specialist consultants to assess the Source, Pathway and Receptor in relation to intended land use. In practice, the client and their professional team frequently specify the solution required, whilst our project management develops a Method Statement to implement these requirements.
  • Sub-Contractors – Specialist skills in this project will be provided by a designated sub-contractor. Their appointment will be governed by both a formal contract and a partnering agreement that ensures that they acknowledge and abide by any environmental requirements determined from the outset.

An Initial Environmental Review is carried out for every new project started, conducted by the Project Manager and the Framework Team. This review identifies any significant Environmental Aspects and Impacts and integrates them into the Environmental Plan for the project.

Pennant Civil Engineering are committed to being fully aware of all relevant standards, applicable legislation and industrial best practices relating to environmental issues and continually monitor operations to ensure compliance. Pennant Civil Engineering, as part of  WJ Harte, are monitored by Envirotec and are a SEPA accredited waste carrier.
